Eligible countries

Down below you can find all countries and nationalities of foreign nationals that are required to apply for an eTA before travelling to Canada.
Please check if you are qualified for an ETA before you apply.

Should you not be able to find your nationality or think you could be exempted from the eTA regulations, please read the sections about total exemption, eTA exemption or visa requirement for more information.
Additionally, please note that the citizens of the countries down below do not need an eTA if entry is not through an airport, but by bus, train, boat, cruise ship, etc.

Total Exemption for certain North American Residents

The following citizens do not require any visa or travel authorization to enter Canada via an airport, only the travel documents stated down below.

  • Canadian (dual) citizens: only valid Canadian passport required
  • American-Canadians: only valid Canadian or U.S. passport required
  • Canadian permanent residents: only permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document required
  • U.S. citizens: only valid U.S. passport required

eTA Exemptions

Foreign nationals who are required to have a valid eTA at departure to Canada may be exempt from this requirement if at least one of the following conditions is met:

  • Holds a valid Canadian visa
  • Holds a valid status in Canada (e.g. visitor, student or worker) and re-enters Canada after only visiting the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon
  • French citizens who live in Saint Pierre and Miquelon and are flying directly to Canada from St. Pierre and Miquelon
  • Passengers destined to, or coming from, the United States on a flight that stops in Canada solely to refuel and have proper documents to enter the United States, or were lawfully admitted to the United States.
  • Passengers on a flight that makes an unscheduled stop in Canada.
  • Transit through a Canadian airport under the Transit Without Visa or China Transit Program
  • Flight crew, civil aviation inspectors, accident investigators who are or will be working while in Canada
  • Members of Armed Forces (not including the civilian component of an armed forces) of a country designated under the Visiting Forces Act coming to Canada to carry out official duties.
  • Diplomats accredited by the Government of Canada


Visa application required

Foreign nationals from the following countries are not eligible for an eTA and must apply for a visa before traveling to Canada by any method of travel (plane, car, bus, train, cruise ship, etc.). Addtionally, foreign nationals who wish to work or study in Canada may require a visa as well. For more information on visa and the application process please contact your nearest Canadian embassy.
